Pamela Ripling named Sarro Award winner

It was a lovely brunch yesterday morning at the Robinson Ranch Clubhouse in Sand Canyon to celebrate the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley Women in Service event.

The annual event, which dates back to 1997 became the Carmen Sarro Award in 2005 to honor long-time SCV volunteer and activist Carmen Sarro.

Sarro, who died in 2003, was the volunteer’s volunteer. There was hardly a nonprofit in the SCV that Sarro didn’t benefit in some way.

She was a force of nature, unstoppable and, if she set her mind to it, I think she could wear down a granite mountain just by her relentlessness.

She was the first city employee. It’s hard to imagine she will have been dead a decade this year.

It was interesting to hear so many women talk about Carmen and the impact she had their careers of service to the Santa Clarita Valley.

Carmen Sarro Award

After Carmen died, her Zonta sisters named the Outstanding Woman of the Community award in her honor. This year’s recipient is Pamela Ripling.

Ripling was nominated by Circle of Hope.

Kudos to all the worthy nominees: Julie Benson, Cindy Bernsdorf, Cyndi Diaz, Sue Endress, Michelle Jenkins, Adele Macpherson, Sue McCabe, Molly McCarthy, Cheryl Phillips, Karen Schnurr, Cathie Rydall, Sue Smyth and Irene Thomas-Johnson.

Money for teachers

Attention all teachers! Do you have a great classroom idea, but don’t have the funds to support it? California Credit Union continues to support the education community by offering a Teacher Grant Program.

CCU will award a total of 10 grants for $500 each. Eligible participants are active full-time classroom teachers in Los Angeles County with qualifying projects. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 12.

For more information on the CCU 2013 Teacher Grant, visit or visit the Valencia branch 23630 Valencia Blvd. Valencia, located at the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard in the Barnes and Noble shopping center.

Congratulations to the Fall 2012 grant winners from the Santa Clarita Valley: Wendy Shaner, Canyon Springs Elementary, Michael Mansfield, Bowman High School, Janie Prucha, Golden Valley High School.

Are you ready for Cowboy?

The annual Cowboy Festival will be here before we know it! It’s always one of my favorite events. Featured performers this year will include Grammy winners Riders in the Sky and the always entertaining, Baxter Black as well as my favorites Hot Club of Cowtown, Sons of the San Joaquin and Don Edwards.

Also on stage will be The Saddle Cats and Ginny Mac. Newcomers Kristyn Harris and The Haunted Windchimes will also appear in the lineup.

In addition to the great music there is always the peach cobbler from the Cowboy Cultural Committee to look forward to.
