The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will conduct a checkpoint for impaired drivers tonight at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. today to 2 a.m. Saturday.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.

DUI checkpoints, along with regularly scheduled high-visibility DUI enforcement, serves as a proven deterrent with the goal of removing impaired drivers and heightened awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, officials said Thursday.

Over the past three years, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station personnel have investigated 212 fatal and injury DUI collision. Countywide, 730 individuals were killed in drunken-driving wrecks.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
