It was quite the Foothill League opener for reigning All-Santa Clarita Valley Player of the Year Kylie Sorenson on Tuesday afternoon.

The senior Stanford commit went 3-for-5 with two, two-run home runs as West Ranch defeated Hart 12-1 in six innings at West Ranch High School.

Catcher Lauren Lombardi picked up four RBIs of her own, Haley Hineman had a double and Keely Walsh went 2-for-2.

The Indians stayed within striking distance through the first half of the contest, trailing 4-1 entering the fifth before the Wildcats busted the game open.

Sorenson had the second of her home runs in a five-run fifth inning that gave West Ranch a commanding 9-1 lead.

The true story, though, was sophomore pitcher Lexi Sorensen, who will be leaned on heavily this season as the last link on an otherwise loaded roster.

In her Foothill League debut, Sorensen was strong, striking out five and walking just two and letting her talented defense go to work behind her.

“If she can go out and believe in herself and let the team back her up, which today was a really good day for her in that sense, she went out there and didn’t lose her composure and really trusted the defense and worked her pitches,” said West Ranch head coach Bob Shults.

Despite the lopsided score, Shults doesn’t believe that Tuesday’s game was the best the defending Foothill League champion Wildcats have to offer.

“I’m very pleased with the score,” he said. “I don’t think the score actually represents the game itself. It was as close to 4-1 for a long time and we had a big inning. I don’t feel that they saw the best West Ranch team they’re going to see this year.”

West Ranch travels to Canyon on Tuesday, while Hart takes on Saugus at William S. Hart PONY Complex in the Lauren Blaire Memorial game at 7 p.m.

Canyon 7, Golden Valley 3

Things were tight into the seventh inning between the Canyon Cowboys and Golden Valley Grizzlies on Tuesday afternoon at Golden Valley High School.

But the Cowboys opened things up in the seventh, scratching three runs across to defeat Golden Valley 7-3 in both teams’ Foothill League openers.

Canyon scratched across three runs in the seventh, two unearned and one off an RBI double by Amanda Doyle.

Tiffany Dyson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kaylie Doyle was 2-for-4 and Miranda Simminet was 2-for-4 on the day for Canyon.

For the Grizzlies, Rebecca Hernandez was 2-for-4 and Merissa Felix was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.

Sydney Herrera was solid on the mound for the Grizzlies, tossing a complete game and allowing just three earned runs with two strikeouts.

One of those came with the bases loaded in the sixth.

The Cowboys used two pitchers on the day, with Brittany Workman getting the start and going two innings, allowing two earned runs with one strikeout.

Nicole Dall picked up the win in relief, throwing five innings with one earned run and one strikeout.

The teams traded runs in the first before Canyon took a 2-1 lead after two. Canyon took a 3-1 lead in the fourth before Golden Valley closed to 3-2 in the fifth.
