SANTA BARBARA (AP) — Officials say Santa Barbara County jail is on lockdown after inmates started a fire, refused to evacuate from their cells and taunted firefighters sent to put it out.

A sheriff's statement says jail staffers discovered the fire Sunday afternoon in a trash can that contained bedding, clothes and other items available to inmates.

Staffers doused the fire but heavy smoke remained, and about 25 inmates suspected of starting the fire barricaded themselves in cells and refused orders to evacuate.

The blaze rekindled as firefighters arrived, and the inmates shouted and threw debris at them as they worked.

Deputies used unidentified "chemical agents" to control the inmates, and two fights broke out as they were forced to evacuate.

Several inmates had minor injuries and one was hospitalized with a head injury.
