Don’t call it an upset, but Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball drove Twin Pines of Banning out of its own building with a 72-53 victory in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VIAA playoffs.

The 12th seeded Cardinals had to make the two-and-a-half hour bus ride to Banning, despite being the higher rated team as SCCS finished third in the Heritage League and the Bobcats were second in the Freedom League.

Junior point guard Davion Cotterell led the way for the Cardinals (16-9) with 31 points.

He has scored 25 or more points in four of the Cardinals’ last five games.

The Cardinals trailed after Twin Pines made the first basket of the game.

It was the only time they would be behind.

SCCS head coach James Mosley gave his big trio of Steven Borden, Collin Keoshian and Chris Fechtelkotter a lot of credit for the victory, as they were able to control the glass and give the Cardinals a lot of second chances.

Borden scored 12 points.

David Perrault added 14 points.

The Cardinals get the winner of the Capistrano Valley Christian-West Shores matchup from Wednesday.

Capistrano is the six seed in the tournament, but also had to play on the road because West Shores finished higher in its own league.

Mosley said he anticipates playing Capistrano in the second round.

The Eagles defeated SCCS 72-38 on Dec. 30.

If the two teams meet, a coin flip will determine the location of Friday’s game.

A West Shores win would give SCCS a home game.
