A woman whose body was found wrapped in a tarp and dumped at the side of San Francisquito Canyon Road two weeks ago does not appear to be the victim of foul play, the lead investigator said Tuesday.

The body was reported on the side of the road April 10 by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power workers near San Francisquito about five miles south of Spunky Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest.

The name of the woman remains unknown.

“There doesn’t appear to be any foul play,” Detective Rich Tomlin of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said Tuesday. “Her death is still undetermined.”

When it was suggested to Tomlin that sometimes people panic when someone dies unexpectedly and don’t know what to do with the body, he replied: “Absolutely.”

“At this point, we have no information about who put her there or how long she had been there,” he said.

Evidence gathered by detectives has led them to believe the woman, whose body was badly decomposed and mummified, was originally from Guatemala, he said.

Tomlin said autopsy results enabled him to determine she was not the victim of foul play.

Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said department investigators continue to go through a list of standard tests used in trying to confirm identity. Coroner investigators had hoped to obtain fingerprints by “re-hydrating” the victim’s fingers.

“We always use fingerprints first, then dental and chest X-rays,” he said Tuesday.

“We look for past injuries for things such as implants and hip replacements,” he said. “Many of those have serial numbers.”

Corral said his office was able to estimate the woman’s age at about 30 years old.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call detectives at the Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.

The woman remains Jane Doe No. 23 until she is identified.
