The Master’s College baseball earned a conference title on Saturday, and the team was rewarded with a cluster of awards on Tuesday with the release of the 2013 Golden State Athletic Conference baseball awards.

All three major honors went to TMC, with sophomore Steven Karkenny winning Player of the Year, senior A.J. Work taking Pitcher of the Year and head coach Monte Brooks bringing home Coach of the Year.

On Saturday, TMC finished the regular season 37-15 overall and 25-11 in conference play to win the GSAC for the first time since 2003.

Leading the offensive effort was Karkenny, the left fielder who is batting .366 with a team-high 52 RBIs and a team-high nine home runs. His slugging percentage is a staggering .634 on the year.

Work is the team’s unquestioned ace with his 10-4 record and 2.67 ERA in 97 2/3 innings pitched across 15 starts and 16 appearances. He also leads the team with 65 strikeouts.

Brooks, the 16th-year head coach at TMC, garners his second GSAC Coach of the Year honor after also winning in 2003. In his time at the helm of the program, Brooks has guided the team to its first-ever NAIA World Series appearance in 2000, finishing in third place and a 2002 NAIA Regional runner-up finish.

Brooks has coached 18 All-Americans and 32 players who have gone on to sign professional baseball contracts during his TMC tenure. He also eclipsed the 400-win mark in his TMC coaching career last season.

Other TMC honorees included sophomore shortstop Jonathan Popadics, senior pitcher Tyler Elrod and junior pitcher Tommy Kister, who were all named to the All-GSAC team.

Conference Gold Glove awards were given to TMC senior first baseman Spencer Downs, sophomore second baseman Sam Robison and junior third baseman Cody Harris in addition to Karkenny for left field and Work for pitcher.
