With so many strong teams in the field, not much was expected from the Foothill League’s three teams in the CIF-Northern Team Divisional at Soule Park Golf Club in Ojai.

Yet the Foothill League was a threat on Monday, with two teams coming up just short of advancing in the postseason.

Foothill League champion West Ranch had the Santa Clarita Valley’s best score with a 390, finishing sixth overall.

Hart finished eighth with a 396 and Valencia ended at 13th with a 414 on the par-72 course.

The top three team scores out of the 18 participating squads on Monday advanced to Thursday’s Southern Section Finals at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

Those teams were Westlake (360), Oaks Christian (375) and Arcadia (376).

Showing just how tough it was to advance, West Ranch had four sub-80 scores (Joey Downey — 76, Steven Moentmann — 76, Casey May — 78 and Jack McClafferty — 79) and still fell 14 strokes short of the final advancing spot.

Jason Del Rosario added an 81 for the Wildcats.

Hart, meanwhile, had one of the season’s best showing in what turned out to be the last team coaching event of head coach Pete Calzia’s career.

The Indians got strong days out of Glen Lee (74), Nick Negrosa (77), Michael Lotta (80), Paul Schneider (82) and Andrew Mulhausen (83).

“As a team I feel like we did an incredible job,” Negrosa said. “Glen shot a 74. A freshman (Lotta) comes in with an 80. In my opinion we did exactly what we needed to do today.”

Calzia is retiring after teaching and coaching (golf, football and baseball) in the William S. Hart Union High School District since 1984.

“Everybody likes to go out on top. I’d rather go out with the kids feeling good about themselves and playing well,” Calzia said. “They’re smiling, having fun, talking to each other. Come on. This is what this is all about.”

Valencia had one sub-80 score with Ronnie Bedrosian’s 76.

Logan Dykes turned in an 80 for the Vikings.

Golf season locally still has some legs as the Foothill League’s top seven golfers will compete in the CIF-SS Northern Individual Regional at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

Downey, Lee, Saugus’ Braden Lewis, May, Golden Valley’s Jonathan Kang, Negrosa and McClafferty will all play,
