BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of being intoxicated in Bakersfield died after a struggle with nine officers after authorities say the suspect resisted arrest.

The Bakersfield Californian reports ( ) that the Kern County coroner on Thursday was conducting an autopsy on the body of 33-year-old David Sal Silva.

Silva died Wednesday after Kern County deputies say he fought them after they approached him about complaints that someone in the area was intoxicated.

Witnesses took cell phone video of the incident, and the phones were seized by deputies for the investigation, the newspaper reported.

Silva's brother, Christopher Silva, says witnesses say his brother was pleading for his life when he was hit with batons. The family wants to see the videos.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt did not comment because of the ongoing investigation.
