The snow-capped mountains in the distance, the deep, clear blue sky, the soft breeze that ruffles the emerging green shoots of spring — can the past week in the Santa Clarita Valley have been more perfect? I will try to hold on to this memory when the temperatures reach 115 in August.

Midwinter Madrigal Feast
If you’ve not attended the annual Midwinter Madrigal Feast in support of the Santa Clarita Master Chorale, this is the year you will want to attend. The event has “upgraded” to the Hyatt Valencia and is unique. This annual drama and benefit will include drawings for vacations to Hawaii and Costa del Sol. With food and wine, songs and silliness, organizers said they promise a fun evening. Tickets are $100 each, and there is no painful live auction to torture attendees. For tickets to the Sunday, March 1, event, call the Master Chorale at (661) 284-1866 or e-mail All you need to bring are your appetite and sense of humor.

Seen at the Sweetheart Ball
Among those seen dancing the night away at the Hyatt Valencia to benefit the new cardiac cath lab at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital were: Steve and Rose Chegwin, Diana Vose and Ernest Guaderrama, Diane and Bob Benjamin, Roberta Veloz, Peter and Karen Veloz, Dale and Tamara Donohoe, Dianne and Wayne Crawford, Jeanna and Kyle Crawford, Eric and Jacque Stroh, Alan and Rise Barbakow, Margo and Bob Hudson, Paul De La Cerda and Seher Awan (attending to represent The Signal’s sponsorship of the event), Marlee Lauffer, Laurie and Chris Ender, Jim and Julia Hicken, John and Sheryl Geraci, Chris and Katrina Schauble and Steve and Elizabeth Hopp.

Men of Harmony rock!

I was surprised and delighted on the day before Valentine’s Day when the Men of Harmony arrived at The Signal to serenade me with some sweet four-part harmony. It was pouring outside, but these gallant gents — David Kilpatrick, Cal Erickson, Jack Matson and Roger Baartman — made my afternoon sweet and harmonious. I was treated to the tunes “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Heart of My Heart,” among others. My deepest thanks to these gentleman who made my day so very special. I was the envy of the entire office. If you’re interested in joining the Men of Harmony visit

Add $4 on race day. Entry fees are reduced for youths 17 and under. Parking fees are included in the registration fee. There will be 22 age-group divisions with awards three deep in each division.
