Officials with the County Coroner's office have identified the Canyon Country  man shot and killed Thursday as 53-year-old Juan Mejia.

Mejia was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Thursday night after having been shot in the head.

Mejia died early Friday morning, 52 minutes after midnight Thursday, said Coroner spokeswoman Lt. Cheryl MacWillie.

On Saturday afternoon,  Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies arrested 31-year-old Juan Alexander Mejia Dubon whom they were looking for in connection with the shooting.

In a news release issued Friday by the sheriff's station, deputies identified Dubon as the victim's son and asked for the public's help in finding him.

On Saturday, they got the help they wanted.

About 4 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a tip from someone that Dubon was spotted in Canyon Country, said Sgt. Rich Nagler.

“We received some information from a citizen that they thought they saw him in Canyon Country,” Nagler said Sunday.

“We went out there and arrested him.”

Dubon was being sought for questioning in connection with the shooting of his father at 11:47 p.m. Thursday in the 19000 block of Newhouse Street in Canyon Country, according to a news release.

At the time of the shooting, deputies described the crimes for which Dubon was wanted as attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the same news release.

Details of any charges, if any, filed in connection with this case were not released Sunday morning.

Dubon’s father was shot in the head and taken to a local hospital where he later died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.

Dubon was thought to be in the area just before the shooting, the release said.

The Dubon family has lived down the street from a house on Newhouse Street for six or seven years, a neighbor of their’s told The Signal.
