Christmas in July

Having just returned from a little visit out of town I have to say that I actually enjoyed my time in the air on Virgin America airlines.

Usually, any trip on a plane more than two hours I consider to be torture. However, Virgin has comfortable seats and each seat has its own television screen. Movies did cost $8 each, but it was well worth the price.

I was able to watch a couple of films I had been wanting to see, for less than what a DVD costs.

The food, also to be purchased, could be ordered from an on screen menu. I enjoyed that option!

Best of all Virgin had the cheapest seats of all the airlines that travel to my destination. I also liked their schedule, more reasonable departure times!

Celebrate Christmas in July

The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry always finds donations are up around the holidays when people get into the "spirit of giving" and down in the summer months when people are busy by the pool or on vacation.

Hosting a Christmas in July Boutique and Food Drive to benefit the Food Pantry is a smart way to restock the dwindling supplies of the pantry.

The event will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at the American Legion Hall – Spruce Street in Newhall (behind the new library).

Admission is free and non-perishable food donations to the SCV Food Pantry are encouraged.

Vendors are needed. The fee is $30 per table (tables will be provided, participants should bring table covers with them) — some vendors will be donating a portion of their sales as a donation — this is not required but very much appreciated.

Each vendor will donate at least one item for raffle. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the SCV Food Pantry.

For more information call the SCV Food Pantry at 661-255-9078.

Mothers and Others

I always enjoy attending the Mothers and Others luncheon held the day before Mothers Day by the Xi Nu Zeta sorority. This year’s event was especially nice. It was fun to see chapter president Evie Leslie present a $5,000 check to Santa Clarita Valley Scholarship Foundation president Elaine Foderaro.

The money was raised by the sorority at its annual Lasagna Dinner. Kudos to all the businesses and individuals that donated to the raffle baskets that helped these ladies raise the money for the donation.

June is almost here

Here’s hoping we get a little "June gloom" — it’s been way too hot lately! There are several June events that are almost upon us.

The Boys & Girls Club of SCV will host its annual auction on June 1. Tickets are still available to attend this important fundraiser. This year’s theme, Rock On! should ... ROCK! for more information visit

The Santa Clarita Master Chorale will host the final concert of its season on June 2 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. This concert promises to be fun and light, with a special appearance by the Santa Clarita Children’s Choir. For information or tickets, visit, or call 661-362-5304.

"Gentlemen for a Cause" was an amazing event last year. Everyone who was there claimed it was the best event they’d attended in a long time. I found this to be a unique and exciting event and am looking forward to June 8 when the event will be held at the Westridge Clubhouse. For information visit
