A 19-year-old man is in custody charged with attempted murder for the Tuesday night stabbing of another man in Canyon Country in what appears to be a gang-related incident, a local sheriff’s spokesman said.

Steven Markarian, of Canyon Country, was arrested by deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station Wednesday afternoon.

He is being held on $1 million bail.

The man he allegedly stabbed is expected to survive his injuries; Lt. Tom Bryski told The Signal an hour after the arrest.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to reports that a man had been stabbed in the abdomen, in the 27000 block of Sara Street, near Chelsea Way and south of Jakes Way, he said.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, deputies arrested the man they believe is the attacker, he said.

“Deputies responded to a stabbing and found a victim with a stab wound to his abdomen,” Bryski said.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, he said.

“I don’t think it was life-threatening,” Bryski said of the victim’s injuries.

The victim was reported by sheriff’s deputies to be in stable condition.

Sgt. Dean Currie of the sheriff’s Career, Offender, Burglary, Robbery Apprehension, or COBRA team, described the incident in a news release as an assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in the River Park Apartment complex where the victim was stabbed with a “knife type” weapon.

COBRA team detectives gathered information about the crime and served a search warrant at the suspect’s residence.
