A portion of Newhall Avenue remains closed after a contractor doing work in the area of William S. Hart Park in Newhall struck an underground natural gas pipeline Thursday afternoon, according to a representative from the Southern California Gas Company.

Lt. John Rush with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said southbound traffic on Newhall Avenue was closed near Fifth Street so crews could work to halt the leak.

About 20 buildings, including the museum at Hart Park, were affected by the outage, said Anne Silva, a spokeswoman for the Southern California Gas Company.

Silva said gas services should be restored around 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Nobody was injured as a result of the leak, Silva said.

Silva said contractors and homeowners can dial “811” to have the gas company come out and mark the location of utility lines and pipes for free. Doing so can help avoid accidental line punctures, Silva said.
