The principal of Arroyo Seco Junior High School, Rhondi Durand, was arrested this week for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station official said Thursday.

Durand, a Canyon Country resident, was involved in a traffic collision around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Jakes Way, according to Detective Brad Thompson with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The collision occurred when the Lexus driven by Durand apparently crashed into a parked car, Thompson said.

Durand was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, the detective said. She was booked on those charges at 8:30 p.m.

Durand apparently has no criminal record, Thompson said. “I don’t see anything (else) on her record,” he said.
Durand was released from custody Thursday and is next due in court July 29 for arraignment.

Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, an official at Arroyo Seco said Durand was not working on the school grounds that day.

Arroyo Seco Junior High is located at 27171 N. Vista Delgado Drive and is part of the William S. Hart Union High School District.

“We have been in contact with the SCV Sheriff’s Department regarding the arrest of one of our junior high principals for an alleged driving violation,” said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for the Hart district. “The district can confirm that this alleged incident occurred after hours and is not connected in any way to a school or district event or activity.

“This is a personnel issue currently under review and we will provide updates as information becomes available.”
