A group of local residents asked the Santa Clarita City Council to give Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon a slap on the wrist for his opposition to President Barack Obama's stimulus package.

Their comments at Tuesday's council meeting were overshadowed by the crowd of local Republicans who turned out in support of McKeon, R-Santa Clarita.

Representing Obama for Change SCV, Bart Bishop presented the council with a proposed resolution accusing McKeon in a group of "obstructionist" legislators who did not adequately review the bill.

Bishop's group proposed the council tell McKeon, "he shall be expected to show better judgment and make a stronger attempt to act in a bipartisan manner with regard to any such serious matters."

McKeon did not back the $787 billion economic recovery signed by Obama last week.

"It's not your job as a council (to censure McKeon)," said Sterling King, who told the audience in about a year he'll be hosting "Obama-withdrawal therapy sessions."

At least eight people stepped up to the microphone in support of McKeon, and the deputy city clerk said 32 comment cards were submitted in support of the congressman.

The council adjourned its meeting without comment.

The local Republican response was organized primarily by e-mail Tuesday, said Bob Haueter, chairman of the 38th Assembly District Republican Central Committee.

"Right now, it's not cool to oppose the stimulus bill. It's not cool to oppose Obama," Newhall resident Marcia Lewis said. "I'm OK with not being cool."
