BANNING, Calif. (AP) — The Hathaway wildfire in the San Bernardino Mountains north of Banning is now 67 percent contained.

Fire officials say the flames burned through nearly six square miles as of Monday morning.

The fire began June 9 near Hathaway Canyon in the northern portion of the Morongo Indian Reservation, about 85 miles east of Los Angeles. The flames are burning in a remote area that is steep and difficult to access.

More than 900 firefighters are battling the blaze, assisted by nine air tankers and 12 water-dropping helicopters.

Nine firefighters have been injured since the wildfire broke out, and one building was destroyed.

Authorities expect full containment by next week. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
