LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles may be joining the battle against the bag.

City News Service says the City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to ban stores from handing out single-use plastic bags. They'd also be required to charge 10 cents for paper bags. The law would take effect next year.

Supporters say the plastic bags litter cities and beaches and endanger wildlife. Manufacturers say the ban would cost jobs.

Los Angeles County and other cities, including San Francisco and Santa Monica, already have bans in place.

Last month, the California Senate rejected a bill that would have phased out use of the bags. It's the fifth such bill to fail in the Senate since 2010.
