ROSEVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Five homes have been damaged by a grass fire that spread from an expansive city park in Roseville, a suburb about 20 miles northeast of the state capital.

Roseville city spokeswoman Vonette McCauley says the blaze started about 2:30 p.m. Friday on a nature trail behind an elementary school. It spread to the 152-acre Maidu Park, burning dry grass and oak woodlands.

The fire then damaged the homes in a surrounding subdivision. Other houses were threatened as firefighters from several agencies fought the flames with help from a water-dropping helicopter.

No injuries were reported.

McCauley says winds hindered firefighters, but they had the blaze 50 percent contained by 4:30 p.m. It had burned about 30 acres in the park.

The fire was among several small blazes in the area.
