SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A 36-year-old Orange County man has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his neighbor because he mistakenly thought the victim was a pedophile.

City News Service reports jurors deliberated for about two hours before convicting Robert Eugene Vasquez of San Juan Capistrano on Thursday.

Vasquez was accused of slashing the throat of Bobby Ray Rainwater Jr. and separately assaulting another neighbor two years ago.

Prosecutors called the crime an act of vigilantism.

The 54-year-old Rainwater had been convicted of felony assault with intent to rape an adult woman in the early 1980s, but was never convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

Vasquez, who will be sentenced Aug. 23, faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
