John Rosemond: Living With Children

Whenever I talk on the subject of self-esteem, how the research strongly suggests that people with high regard for themselves have correspondingly low regard for others and that high self-esteem is highly associated with antisocial behavior like bullying, people become understandably perplexed. After all, the notion that a state of high self-esteem is desirable has become as "American" as mom and apple pie.

David Hegg: The Corrosive Nature of Negativity

Have you noticed that it is increasingly easy to become a negative person? Is it just me or has criticism and disdain become our national pastime here in America? What is it about us that longs to both recognize and report all the things we see or experience that are bad or broken, at least in our opinion?

Correction: Fair Oaks Ranch

In Lynne Plambeck's July 19 Environmentally Speaking column, the number of oak trees cut down in the development of Fair Oaks Ranch was misstated. Pardee Homes says that although it was permitted to remove about 100 oak trees, the actual number cut down was less than 40.

Jim Walker: Karma and the failures of Facebook

Does it not seem ironic that so many people are ranting about Facebook's poor IPO ... on Facebook? I mean, the mere fact you use that social outlet to do your venting only points out your need for it. It's kind of like voting for a candidate you violently oppose, you know, just to teach him the error of his ways.

Jim Walker: Misplaced calls and crises of conscience

A few months ago, I got a couple calls to my cellphone from a "restricted" number. These calls were several weeks apart, and I let both go directly to messages. Both messages turned out to be from a certain local business, and both were intended for "Benjamin," who I am not.

Jim Walker: Let’s turn off, tune out and drop in

So, I put on the TV news the other morning, and the first thing I saw was video clips of brutes smacking women around and stealing their smartphones. And I learned that the FCC and the major wireless carriers in the U.S. have agreed to create a central database of stolen cellphones in an effort to reduce their resale value and, therefore, cut down on the appeal of phone theft.

Bob Kellar: City goes green for Earth Arbor Day

Writer Wendell Berry is often quoted for saying "the Earth is what we all have in common" - and in today's challenging social and economic times, his words are a great reminder that, despite our differences, there is still one unifying principal among all of humanity - our planet.
