People who are bringing in weapons are actually going to WEAR them on their body, under their clothing. The vast majority aren't packing guns, knives, etc., around in a backpack. The only people they're catching by checking purses is moms sneaking in snacks and drinks.

Every off duty male cop on earth wears a gun on their waistband, females usually put theirs in their purse, but sometimes wear them. These are the armed people you ACTUALLY WANT to have in the theater in the event of a fruitcake with an agenda. I know a cop who had his gun in a fanny pack and the movie kid checking bags had to get his manager who then wanted to photocopy his ID, after being shown his badge, etc. This is ridiculous. If you want to catch BAD people bringing in weapons (and they don't, this is just for show and is temporary in my opinion) get a metal detector. Otherwise, don't bother with this dog and pony show.

Went to the movies to see Mission Impossible. My wife had her bag checked. I have no issue with her or I being checked. The only problem I have is it would be nothing for some idiot to place a bag next to one of the exits, and go through the entrance clean. Then head over to the exit and pick up his weapon. So the check at the door isn't a secure solution.

Unless you have trained armed security with metal detectors at controlled entrances and exits, searching backpacks, etc. is security theater.
