Should retail stores be open on Thanksgiving?

tech: November 16, 2015 9:45 p.m.

This is a matter for public opinion?

Retail stores should be free to set their own policies. Consumers can decide whether to patronize them on Thanksgiving. Or not.

The End.

This is just an opinion poll, not an attempt to change business regulations.

That said, I feel they should not be open for one reason: Family. Whatever your view on the holiday is (and I've heard some pretty twisted and dumb versions recently), in the end its a time to get together and spend time with those you love. To have stores open during this time (1) takes those who have to work away from their families or risk losing their job and (2) draws out consumers so they spend less time with family to go get that "incredible" deal.

I get it that business should be allowed to choose what they do, and that some workers have a choice not to work at a retailer. However I think we are loosing something much more valuable in the process.

Its the busiest travel day of the year for a reason - sometimes its the only time of the year the whole family gets together.
