Chevy introduces the most new product in decade

Power Chevrolet Valencia was one of the first dealerships to open in Santa Clarita

Just like General Motor’s iconic muscle cars that helped the brand revolutionize the market, Chevrolet is revved and roaring to the marketplace with more new products than the public has seen in a decade.

"We’ve got all this new product coming out here, and we are very excited," said Chuck Coia, general manager with Power Chevrolet Valencia.

Opened in 1978, the local Chevy dealer was one of the very first dealerships to open in Santa Clarita, giving residents one of the first options to shop and buy locally.

With more than 60 employees, Power Chevrolet Valencia has also helped to keep the local economy growing.

Nationally, auto sales are estimated to have increased year-over-year in 2012, and it looks like the industry will hit more than 14 million in sales this year, Coia said.

"The economy is on an upswing," Coia said. "Power Chevrolet Valencia saw its sales increase 12 percent last year."

Chevy’s more than 13 new models that have arrived, or are coming, to Santa Clarita between now and January 2014 will add to the increase in sales. And factory incentives have been beefed up for buyers, as well.

"We’re told by GM that the Cruze, which is only two years old, will be our oldest product by the end of 2014," Coia said.

And taking advantage of its high-performance car history, many of the automobiles that made Chevy famous are debuting at the local dealership this year.

Muscle cars

Debuting this year at Daytona is the Chevy SS rear wheel drive sedan, with a 6.2 liter engine and 415 horsepower – one of the original muscle cars.

Power Chevrolet Valencia will also be home to the latest model Corvette — the C7 — later this fall, he said.

It’s been eight years since General Motors last introduced a new Corvette model – its signature high-performance sports car. Originally designed with California drivers in mind, the Corvette was first introduced as a concept car in 1953.

A newly redesigned Camaro will also be out in the upcoming future. It will have a new front end, Coia said.

But for driving enthusiasts, these models are just the beginning of what local residents will see at Power Chevrolet Valencia this year.

Wide selection

"Recently, we released the new Traverse. We have a model on the showroom floor now," he said.

And the mid-size Equinox has a new look, as well. Both vehicles are a cross between a sedan and SUV, making them family-friendly, Coia said.

"We have a newly designed Impala, too," he said. "That will be here in about a month."

Power Chevrolet Valencia is also expecting a new electric vehicle, the Spark EV, to team with its Volt, Coia said. The tech-savvy mini car, designed for the entry-level vehicle market, will begin selling around $12,900, he said. And the fuel-efficient, compact Sonic auto is also out in a hatchback or sedan model and starts selling between $14,000 and $15,000.

There is also a new diesel-engine Cruze model coming out in the fall, which is exciting, Coia said. And a newly designed Silverado – with new body and interiors – arrives in May, Coia said.

"The best thing about Chevrolet is we can market to just about everyone," Coia said. "We have full-size trucks to small cars to Suburbans. There are a lot of families in Santa Clarita, and the SUVs are very popular."

To complement all of the new products, Power Chevrolet Valencia has a brand new showroom and service area for its cars and customers as a result of a more than $2 million investment and a seven-month reconstruction project in 2012, he said.

But what the dealership wants more of are used autos, Coia said. There has been a marketwide shortage.


"The used car market is really strong right now," Coia said. "We can’t get enough of them. We are actively trying to buy cars from people even if they’re not buying a car from us."

Used car values are up, he said, making it a good time to trade in and buy a new car. For those buyers looking for a used vehicle, General Motors is offering a certified pre-owned program that give buyers an extra layer of assurance, he said.

"General Motors really stepped up with our certified pre-owned program," Coia said. "There’s a more rigorous check that we have to perform, and we have to use all factory parts. The car has to be in a certain condition before we can even certify them."

As for Coia, he’s looking forward to a great year. Since October 2009 at Power Chevrolet Valencia, he’s overseen almost everything — from a tough economy to a major reconstruction project. But now, Coia sees all positive signs for the future.

Power Chevrolet Valencia has new cars and upgraded models arriving nearly every other month this year.

"There’s so much positive going forward in our new facility," Coia said. "We really have a good opportunity to both sell and service our valley’s needs here."
